During the Daily 5, first students write in their journals following the daily writing prompt. Once they are done that, they have a choice of what they can work on next. These choices are:
Here are some photos of students at work during the Daily 5. On Friday afternoon I thought it would be fun to practice Math skills on the school laptops. Although most of the time was spent getting students used to logging on to the computers and opening a web page, everyone seemed to enjoy the tech time. Definitely something we will do again in the future!
Here is the website we visited: www.mathplayground.com/index_addition_subtraction.html The school had some visitors from the Ottawa University Teacher's College. They came to the school and set up different Math stations for students to try. It was fun seeing students so engaged while also doing Math!
A fun way to practice mental Math!
Watch the slide, think about what the answer is, and then colour in the corresponding box. It took a little bit of patience for the students to persevere through all the questions and trust that it would turn into an image at the end. The class worked on this activity eager to see what the secret image would be. Once they were done, students felt accomplished with the finished product! In line with our spooky October theme, students were tasked with writing an ad about a haunted house for sale.
How did we do it? First, students designed their haunted house. Second, they filled in a graphic organizer to help them organize their thoughts and decide what could be found in the different areas of the house (upstairs, downstairs, in the yard). Lastly, they worked on their final draft making sure they added details, descriptive words, and proper punctuation. Their client-base were monsters, so they needed to think about what monsters might look for in a house. We had some pretty creative and spooky ideas! Students will eventually be bringing their work home to share with you but until then, here's a sneak peek at some of their work. Happy Halloween! We had our regular classes in the morning but managed to fit in some Halloween fun in the afternoon. Some students brought in their costumes to wear and show to the class as well. Halloween excitement was definitely in the air!
Thank you very much to Kayden and family as well as Amy and family for bringing in treats to share with the class! Here is a short activity we did to practice our paragraph writing. Students needed to use the OREO model (Opinion, Reason, Example/Reason, Opinion) in order to explain what they would do or how they would feel if they were a Thanksgiving Turkey. As part of the process, students turned themselves into turkeys! We also read "The Great Turkey Race" by Steve Metzer to help us get inspired. |
